University Entrance Exams in 2023 (Admission Campaign 2023)
For safety reasons, it was decided to conduct the NMT in one day. The test lasted 180 minutes, so each section took 60 minutes to complete. It should be noted that the test-takers could manage their time, so those who completed the Ukrainian language or math tasks faster were able to work longer on the subject of their choice.
Due to Russia's large-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine, for the second year, the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment (UCEQA) conducted a national multi-subject test (NMT) instead of the traditional external independent testing (EIT).
The NMT included three sections of test items, two of them were compulsory, and the third was optional. The compulsory subjects were Ukrainian language, Mathematics and the optional subjects were History of Ukraine, foreign language (English, German, French or Spanish), Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
Applicants indicated the subject of their choice during the registration.
After completing all of the NMT tasks, each test-taker received information about the number of test points for each section. For the competitive selection the results of each section were converted to 100-200 score scale. The Ministry of Education and Science had approved a table of correspondence before the examination. To get a result on a scale of 100-200 points for each section of the NMT, it was necessary to score at least 10% of the total number of test points. Immediately after the test all the test-takers could find out their results on a scale of 100–200 points using the table of correspondence of test score points to the rating assessment for each school subject of the NMT, which had been presented in the Procedure for Admission to Higher Education in 2023.
Registration for the test was available on the Center's website from April 3 to May 3.
Within the additional period (June 5-12, 2023), applicants who, for valid reasons, did not register for the NMT during the main period or whose registration was declined could register.
The NMT was held in two sessions: the main and the additional. The main session was held from June 5 to 26, and the additional session was held from July 11 to 24.
Like last year, in 2023, the NMT was held in temporary examination centers (TECs) mostly based on educational institutions. In Ukraine, in coordination with the regional military state administrations, TECs were established in 21 regions and the city of Kyiv. Unfortunately, due to the large-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation, it was not possible to conduct NMT in Kherson, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions, and due to the annexation of territories - in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. At the same time, the Ukrainians could pass the exam abroad in centers located in 53 cities in 32 countries.
In total, 261,632 students (93.04% of the number of applicants who confirmed their participation) took the NMT. 20,008 students passed the test during the main sessions abroad. The attendance rate in Ukraine was 93% and over 86% abroad. 7,749 test-takers, including 2,535 abroad took part in the additional sessions of the NMT (that is more than 82% and more than 70% of the number of applicants who confirmed their participation in these sessions).
Information about the results of the main NMT session on the 100-200 score scale was delivered to the personal accounts of test-takers on June 28, 2023. The results of the additional session were presented by July 29, 2023.
Some Results of the Main NMT Session
As last year, the NMT will take place in specially equipped computer classrooms of educational institutions - Temporary Examination Centers (TECs) - arranged in settlements both in Ukraine and abroad. We will inform you about the countries in which the testing will take place as soon as we know all the addresses. The enemy keeps attacking our cities, so, like last year, testing will be suspended during air alerts and will continue only after the test-takers and TEC staff return from shelters.
The test-takers will be allowed to independently choose the third subject of the NMT. The results of testing in the elective subject will be accepted by universities, no matter what speciality to apply for. However, for admission to different specialties, different coefficients will be applied to the NMT results. If the applicant enters the Law courses, the result in the History of Ukraine will have more weight than in Biology, and vice versa for the medical specialties.
In the History of Ukraine in 2023 testing, test tasks will cover events of the second half of the 16th - the beginning of the 21st centuries.
In foreign language testing, there will be neither open-ended questions or tasks based on listening. We would like to note: the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment is developing a testing platform where future applicants will find similar tasks to practise soon.
As last year, applicants will be allowed to use reference materials when working with math tasks.
The Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment will prepare demonstration versions of all NMT blocks no later than May 2023, so test-takers will have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the testing format and practice completing the tasks.
It is important to remind that applicants who have got the 2022 NMT results and the 2021 or 2020 EIE (ZNO) results can use them instead of the 2023 NMT results to apply.
Everyone who applies for a Master's degree based on a Bachelor's degree will take the Unified Entrance Examination (UEE), which will have two blocks: the General Education Competency Test or the Test in General Education Competency (TGEC) and a foreign language test (English, German, French, Spanish). Also, for admission to specialties 05 Social and Behavioral Sciences, 06 Journalism, 07 Management and Administration, 08 Law, 28 Public Management and Administration, 29 International Relations, it will be necessary to take and pass the Unified Professional Entrance Exam (UPEE).
Currently, two UEE, UPEE sessions are planned: main and additional. Exams will be held from June 26 to July 18.
