Traditional Entrance Examinations for Master’s Degree Programmes / School Leaving Examinations in Ukraine

The Unified Professional Entrance Exam consisted of two separate tests: the General Learning Competencies Test and the Law Subject Test taken by Law students. The Unified Entrance Exam was taken by most of the students entering Master’s Degree programmes, it was a test in one of the foreign languages – English, German, French or Spanish (under the student’s choice).

Traditional Entrance Examinations for Master’s Degree Programmes / School Leaving Examinations in Ukraine

Due to hostilities in Ukraine, the traditional Unified Professional Entrance Exam and Unified Entrance Exam were cancelled. here.

In 2017–2021, to enter Master’s Degree programmes, students had to take special examinations: the Unified Professional Entrance Exam and the Unified Entrance Exam.

The exams were developed gradually:

  • 2016
    In 2016, the Unified Professional Entrance Exam was introduced and piloted in five cities of Ukraine: as Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Poltava, and Chernivtsi. Nine Ukrainian universities supported piloting this exam and used its results for students’ enrollment.
  • 2017
    In 2017, every applicant willing to obtain a Master’s Degree in Law (081) had to take the Unified Professional Entrance Exam. The exam consisted of three sub-tests: the General Competency Test (Ukrainian version of LSAT), the Law Subject Test, and the Foreign Language Test (English, Spanish, German or French).
  • 2018-2021
    In 2018, the list of Master’s Degree programmes requiring standardized tests was expanded. Since then, the results of the Unified Professional Entrance Exam (tests in general competency and Law) were used for Law and International Law programmes. Students entering these programmes also had to take the Unified Entrance Exam. Such exams for Law students were used in 2018–2021. The Unified Entrance Exam (the Foreign Language Test) was used to enter the whole range of Master’s Degree programmes such as Humanities (except Philology), Social and Behavioural Studies, Journalism, Service Sector, International Relations etc. Students could choose one of the foreign languages among English, Spanish, German and French.
  • 2019-2021
    From 2019 to 2021, students entering the whole range of Master’s Degree programmes had to take the Foreign Language Exam (the Unified Entrance Exam in English, German, Spanish or French).
  • 2022
    Due to hostilities in Ukraine, the traditional Unified Entrance Exam and Unified Professional Entrance Exam were cancelled. The online computer-based assessments were conducted instead.
  • 2023 
    In 2023, the Unified Professional Entrance Exam (UPEE) and the Unified Entrance Exam (UEE) were held for those wishing to enter Master's Degree programmes. The UEE is a compulsory entrance test for Master's Degree programmes that includes assessment of general academic competence (TGAC) and a foreign language ability. Applicants can choose one of the following foreign languages: English, German, French or Spanish. The UPEE is an entrance exam for Master's Degree programmes that assess students' preparation in the specialty. For the first time, the UPEE consisted of six separate tests on the following subjects: economics and international economics, political science and international relations, psychology and sociology, accounting and finance, management and administration, law and international law.
  • 2024 
    Bachelor's degree graduates entering Master's Degree programmes have to take the Unified Entrance Exam (UEE), which consists of two sub-tests: general academic competence (TGAC) and a foreign language test (English, German, French, Spanish). Those who will be entering the following specialties  01 "Education/Pedagogy" (except of 017 "Physical Culture and Sports"), 05 "Social and Behavioral Sciences", 06 "Journalism", 07 "Management and Administration", 08 "Law", 12 "Information Technology", 24 "Service Sphere", 28 "Public Management and Administration", 29 "International Relations" will have to pass the Unified Professional Entrance Exam (UPEE), provided for an assessment of the level of the professional preparation.
